We have a Windows 2003 domain, everyone has IE7 and Firefox on their desktops. There are a few versions of Firefox, and I want to update everyone to the latest - Firefox 3.6 via GP software install. I saw one free product FrontMotion Firefox MSI - setup a GP, tried it on two XP systems, it did upgrade but "update" options were taken off, in Firefox ----- Tools/options/advanced/update tab ---- under automatically check for updates to: All options should be available to check on/off, by default all are on to be checked for updates. All were taken off and grayed out after the upgrade with the mentioned software. If anyone used this software and can help (I posted on their site also with no luck), or ------ you can recommend a way to get Mozilla Firefox out to desktops via GP it would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob |

Hello,
B> If anyone used this software and can help (I posted on their site also B> with no luck), or ------ you can recommend a way to get Mozilla Firefox B> out to desktops via GP it would be appreciated. Firefox is not group policy-friendly. Usually, in the network you not only want to deploy, but also to control by group policy - and this is not possible. Some 3rd party is making what they call group policy editor of firefox settings, but it's not true policy, and the user can change them. FrontMotion, if I recall correctly, provides free MSI, but charges for customizations, so if you want any deviation from what's in the standard MSI, you have to pay them. That said, updates in their MSI are probably disabled for a reason. Firefox will update itself with its native setup, it won't upgrade MSI installation. If you deploy by MSI, you will have to upgrade to the next version by the next MSI. Maybe it will be easier to deploy using .zap file, or by logon script. Finally, IMHO, IE8 is much faster than Firefox. Flash in IE8 is faster than in Firefox about 10 times. |
