Default Virtual Newbie :D

Hello all,

I am a virtual newbie. I have been evaluating virtualziation software (ESX,
ESXi, Server on linux and windows) and I found Microsoft has one as well.
I downloaded and installed Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and was a bit
disappointed that once I logged in, it was pretty much command line stuff
(was hoping for a nice GUI or something), but after a bit of research it
seems (and this is what I need confirmed) that I have install Hyper-V Mgmt
Tool and this tool only runs on Windows 2008 or Windows Vista (Vista?
Really?)?

?
HV is a role in windows 2008. Can be run directly on appropriate PC/Server
or as virtual VM on windows 2008. Can install with full gui as well as
without.
Pls do more reading and not confused with system mgmt center for HV

Actually he's talking about the free Windows Hyper-V Server, which is
*not* the same thing as Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V.

What he's talking about is a free download and there isn't any GUI
option, and it only runs Hyper-V, no other normal server roles.

And to the OP,

What you see is what you get with the free version. I believe there's
a version of the admin tools for Windows 7 as well...

If you want the GUI built in, you're going to have to go with Windows
2008 R2 w Hyper-V role, but that, of course, isn't free.

Please take more time to read, understand and comprehend before you reply. I
did state pretty clear "I downloaded and installed Microsoft Hyper-V Server
2008 R2" which I know is not the same as Mgmt Tools.

Robert:
Thank you much for the update. I saw some tools for windows 7, but was
unsure if those tools were the ones that fully allowed me to create/manage
guests, add datastores (or whatever Microsoft calls them), etc.

They should do everything the other tools do.
