Default Saved State of VMs

Microsoft has not made it easy to figure out what the "Saved State" of a VM is.

We use Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 as the host OS for our VMs and we use System Manager or SCVMM running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise servers to manage these VMs. From either SM or SCVMM I can "save" a VM by selecting a VM and clicking on the Save command.

Two questions:

* What is "saved"?

*Where is it saved?
