Default Hyper-V Server 2008

OK, I've got Hyper-V Server installed and, after 4 hours of screwing around,
I can now ping it and make a RDP connection to it. However, I still can't
make MMC snapin connections to it. My RDP is from a Vista X64 workstation
and I'm trying to MMC to it from a windows X86 Server 2008. Every snapin
that I've tried says it can't connect.

Anyone got any suggestions about where to look?

See the excellent series of blog posts from John Howard. There are five in
the series, covering slightly different scenarios. Here's the link to the
first:
http://blogs.technet.com/jhoward/arc...putername.aspx

That's a huge long link, so if all else fails, just go to John Howard's
blog. You'll be able to find it from there.

Is this a workgroup? With a domain it all just works. I remember having
problems trying to do this from Vista into Server 2008 in a workgroup.

It can be a problem in domains, too, though I have seen it "just work"
there. But certainly in a workgroup there are things you need to configure,
or where you're dealing with a separate domain.

IMNSHO, MS needs to make this simpler. But in the mean time, it's possible
following the steps in the series of blog posts.

Thanks, Charlie, That's what I needed.

PS: the computer is part of a domain. And, I didn't have this problem when I
set up a W2K8 Server Core machine.

I did set up a Hyper-V Server 2008 (baremetal). It is still in a workgroup,
runs fine and I can do a RDP to the machine.
Next to it I put a Vista SP1 with the Hyper-V MMC in the same network range.
Strangly I couldn't connect to the Hyper-V server even though they are in the
same workgroup. I then tried to use the same login/pass on both machines. I
could connect then but I had no permission to manage it... :/

What I really want to do is setting up an SBS2003 on a Hyper-V server.

Follow the EXACT steps in the blog post series I referenced earlier in the

Thanks for your reply Charly,

At the first the day I wrote this the blog was down.
Now I gave it a view, but all steps are provided for Windows Server 2008
with HYPER-V enabled. My problem is Windows HYPER-V server (the baremetal
version). I can't manage it with a VISTA SP1. It only works when the HYPER-V
server and Vista are a member of the domain.

Maybe I've missed some things, not sure...

Thanks in advance,
Vincent

Default Re: Hyper-V Server 2008

There are 5 individual posts in the series. You want the one that has Vista
SP1 and workgroup, and Server Core. That would be part 3 and/or part 5,
depending on how you're configured. (Part 5 is domain joined Vista,
workgroup joined Server

Hyper-V Server is essentially the same as Server 2008 Core with the Hyper-V
Role installed. The one difference is that you can't install any additional
roles on the Hyper-V server. So simply follow the steps for Server Core.
