sms back ever never ends smsexec stopped

We have sms 2003 sp2 and the last two weeks the backup (done via the
console) of sms never finishes causing smsexec to not start and the
server to fail until the backup is stopped and exec started.

The general server backup never finishes because apparently there are
million of files in th inbox. I am not experienced with the back end
as I mainly just deploy packages. Can anyone tell me what we need to
do to stop this issue?

If you have an inbox backlog, that is a problem that needs to be solved.

You may want to open a call with Microsoft; alternatively, which inbox is
backlogged? perhaps there is a known issue that we could help lead you to a
solution to eliminate the backlog, and potentially determine how that backlog
was created, so you can prevent it in the future.
