Is there still no proper fix for this? Cannot find anything in searching...

The workaround in the kb article.
Otherwise, the 'fix' is to upgrade from the no-longer-supported SMS2003 to ConfigMgr07, and start using exclusively Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop, and not the designed-10-or-more-years-ago Remote Tools that hasn't changed since SMS 2.0. Or abandon Remote Tools completely (if you can't upgrade from SMS2003, which I hope you have in the works somewhere), and switch to a for-pay 3rd party remote tool.
